One person killed, and one other person injured near 4001 W 59TH ST in West Lawn

A driver was killed after a Friday early morning hit-and-run turning collision in West Lawn on June 23, 2023 at 4:44 AM. One other person reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 4001 W 59TH ST, on an undivided road. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. The weather was clear and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2021 Ford Mustang was heading south. The police report described the driver, a 25-year-old man, as going too fast for conditions. His airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
  • A 2021 Toyota RAV4 was heading north while turning left and was hit in the side-right. The driver, a 50-year-old man, was killed; his airbag deployed and he was totally ejected.

There was one other vehicle involved but not being driven: A 2007 Honda CR-V, hit in the rear.

Police were notified at 4:44 AM. This was the 1,114th injurious crash reported in June 2023, and the 7,312th injurious crash reported in 2023. It was the 71st fatal crash for 2023.
