One person killed, two people severely injured near 77 W LOWER WACKER DR in The Loop

A passenger was killed; and a driver and another passenger were severely injured after a Friday early morning turning collision in The Loop on January 11, 2019 at 1:09 AM.

The crash occurred near 77 W LOWER WACKER DR, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to disregarding traffic signals.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2004 Mazda Mazda3 was heading southeast while making a U-turn. The police report described the driver, a 29-year-old woman, as attempting an improper turn. Her airbag deployed; she reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries. A 1-year-old female passenger was killed; her airbag deployed and she was totally ejected. A 29-year-old male passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed.
  • A 2002 Acura was heading east and was hit in the front. The driver, a 19-year-old man, was uninjured; his airbag deployed. Three other passengers were uninjured.

Police were notified at 1:09 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 359th injurious crash reported in January 2019, and the 359th injurious crash reported in 2019. It was the 4th fatal crash for 2019.
