One person killed, one person severely injured, and 12 other people injured near 4501 S LAKE SHORE DR NB in Kenwood
A passenger was killed and another passenger was severely injured after a Sunday morning head on collision in Kenwood on July 9, 2023 at 5:57 AM. 12 other people reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
The crash occurred near 4501 S LAKE SHORE DR NB, on a one-way road. The posted speed limit was 45 mph. It was dawn, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to traveling the wrong way or on the wrong side; and, secondarily, to reckless, careless, or aggressive driving.
There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:
- A 2018 Dodge Journey was heading south while driving the wrong way. The police report described the driver, a 29-year-old man, as going the wrong way. He was uninjured. A 37-year-old female passenger was killed; her airbag deployed. A 32-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed.
- A 2012 NEW Flyer operated by the CTA was heading north and was hit in the front-right-corner. The driver, a 31-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. 11 of his passengers reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. Seven other passengers were uninjured.
Police were notified at 5:58 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 404th injurious crash reported in July 2023, and the 8,069th injurious crash reported in 2023. It was the 75th fatal crash for 2023.
