Two people killed, one person severely injured near 6900 S STATE ST in Grand Crossing

A driver and a passenger were killed; and another driver was severely injured after a Thursday night sideswipe opposite direction collision in Grand Crossing on April 16, 2020 at 10:40 PM.

The crash occurred near 6900 S STATE ST, at a 5 (or more) point intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry but reportedly had a worn surface. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to yield right of way; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche was heading west. The police report described the driver, a 56-year-old man, as failing to yield. His airbag deployed from the front and he was trapped; he was killed.
• A 2007 Toyota Corolla was heading east and was hit in the front-right-corner. The driver, a 41-year-old woman, reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed. A 14-year-old female passenger was wearing a seat belt, her airbag deployed, and was trapped; she was killed.

Police were notified at 10:53 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 318th injurious crash reported in April 2020, and the 3,695th injurious crash reported in 2020. It was the 25th fatal crash for 2020.
