One person killed near 2159 S ASHLAND AVE in Lower West Side

A passenger was killed after a Sunday early morning angle collision in Lower West Side on December 20, 2020 at 4:11 AM.

The crash occurred near 2159 S ASHLAND AVE, on an undivided road. The posted speed limit was 35 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to disregarding traffic signals.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2011 Jeep Cherokee was heading north. The police report described the driver, a 34-year-old man, as disregarding traffic controls/signals. His airbag deployed; he was uninjured. An unknown age male passenger was killed; his airbag deployed and he was trapped.
• A 2016 Toyota RAV4 was heading west and was hit in the front. The driver, a 32-year-old man, was uninjured; his airbag deployed. One other passenger was uninjured.

Police were notified at 4:11 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 651st injurious crash reported in December 2020, and the 13,810th injurious crash reported in 2020. It was the 131st fatal crash for 2020.
