Two people killed near 1600 E 95TH ST in South Deering

A driver and a passenger were killed after a Tuesday evening turning collision in South Deering on August 31, 2021 at 8:05 PM.

The crash occurred near 1600 E 95TH ST, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to disregarding traffic signals; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A motorcycle of unknown make was heading north. The police report described the driver, a 30-year-old man, as failing to yield. He was wearing a non-DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet and he was totally ejected; he was killed. A 23-year-old female passenger was killed.
  • A 2019 Chrysler Pacifica was heading south while turning left and was hit in the front-right-corner. The police report described the driver, a 26-year-old woman, as failing to yield. She was wearing a seat belt and her airbag did not deploy; she was uninjured. Two other passengers were uninjured.

Police were notified at 8:10 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 1,560th injurious crash reported in August 2021, and the 10,634th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 93rd fatal crash for 2021.
