Three people killed, one person severely injured near 10020 S HALSTED ST in Washington Heights

Three passengers were killed and a driver was severely injured after a Saturday night collision with a fixed object in Washington Heights on February 18, 2023 at 10:58 PM.

The crash occurred near 10020 S HALSTED ST, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to reckless, careless, or aggressive driving; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

A 2008 Infiniti G35 was heading south. The police report described the driver, an 18-year-old man, as disregarding traffic controls/signals. His airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries. An 18-year-old male passenger was killed; his airbag deployed. A 19-year-old male passenger was killed; his airbag deployed. An 18-year-old male passenger was killed; his airbag deployed. One other passenger was uninjured.

Police were notified at 10:58 PM. This was the 700th injurious crash reported in February 2023, and the 1,797th injurious crash reported in 2023. It was the 24th fatal crash for 2023.
