One person killed, and one other person injured near 1550 N LAKE SHORE DR in Gold Coast

A passenger was killed after a Sunday early morning rear end collision in Gold Coast on November 21, 2021 at 12:30 AM. One other person reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 1550 N LAKE SHORE DR, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 40 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash; and, secondarily, to driving after drinking (no arrest was made).

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt was heading south. The police report described the driver, a 30-year-old woman, as going too fast for conditions and having been drinking. She was wearing a seat belt and her airbag deployed; she was uninjured.
  • A Toyota RAV4 operated by a rideshare service was heading south and was hit in the rear. The driver, a 49-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. A 46-year-old male passenger was not wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed; he was killed.

Police were notified at 12:30 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 906th injurious crash reported in November 2021, and the 14,687th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 135th fatal crash for 2021.
