One person killed, one person severely injured, and two other people injured near 5100 W CHICAGO AVE in Austin

A driver was killed and a passenger was severely injured after a Thursday evening sideswipe same direction collision in Austin on May 16, 2019 at 8:51 PM. 2 other people reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 5100 W CHICAGO AVE, on an undivided road. The posted speed limit was 35 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to improper overtaking or passing.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was heading west while passing another vehicle. The driver, a 19-year-old man, was killed; his airbag deployed from the front. A 19-year-old male passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed.
• A 2018 Chevrolet Equinox was heading west and was hit in the roof. The driver, a 58-year-old man, reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed. A 56-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed from the side.

Police were notified at 8:51 PM. This was the 758th injurious crash reported in May 2019, and the 5,367th injurious crash reported in 2019. It was the 34th fatal crash for 2019.
