One person killed, four people severely injured, and four other people injured near 12145 S TORRENCE AVE in South Deering

A driver was killed; and two other drivers and two passengers were severely injured after a Saturday afternoon sideswipe same direction collision in South Deering on May 13, 2023 at 4:30 PM. 4 other people reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 12145 S TORRENCE AVE, on an undivided road. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. The weather was clear and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to traveling the wrong way or on the wrong side; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

There were four motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2012 Chrysler 300 was heading north while driving the wrong way. The police report described the driver, a 28-year-old man, as going the wrong way. His airbag deployed; he was killed.
• A 2021 Hyundai Tucson was heading north. The driver, a 58-year-old woman, reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed. A 20-year-old male passenger reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed.
• A 2015 Ford Explorer was heading south and was hit in the front. The driver, a 32-year-old man, reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed. A 32-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed. A 5-year-old female passenger was in a child restraint and her airbag deployed; she reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. A 2-year-old male passenger was in a child restraint and his airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. A 9-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed.
• A 2022 Chevrolet Silverado was heading north. The driver, a 24-year-old man, was uninjured; his airbag deployed. A 20-year-old male passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed.

Police were notified at 4:30 PM. This was the 627th injurious crash reported in May 2023, and the 5,329th injurious crash reported in 2023. It was the 56th fatal crash for 2023.
