One pedestrian killed near 7900 S LAFAYETTE AVE in Chatham

A pedestrian was killed after a Monday night hit-and-run collision in Chatham on January 2, 2023 at 10:10 PM.

The crash occurred near 7900 S LAFAYETTE AVE, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was foggy, and the roadway was wet. The police report did not specify a cause for the crash.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2013 Dodge Durango was heading south. The police report did not have details about the driver, or their three passengers.
  • A 2006 NEW Flyer D40LF operated by the CTA was heading south and was hit in the side-left. The driver, a 51-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag did not deploy; he was uninjured. One other passenger was uninjured.

A 45-year-old man (pedestrian) was in a crosswalk and wearing reflective material. The police report described him as crossing with the signal; he was killed.
