One person killed, three people severely injured near 5044 W LAKE ST in Austin

A driver was killed and three passengers were severely injured after a Sunday early morning hit-and-run sideswipe same direction collision in Austin on December 18, 2022 at 2:38 AM.

The crash occurred near 5044 W LAKE ST, on an undivided road. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. It was dark but with streetlights and the weather was clear. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to improper overtaking or passing; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2020 Nissan Altima was heading west while passing another vehicle. The police report described the driver, a 30-year-old woman, as attempting to pass improperly. Her airbag deployed and she was trapped; she was killed. A 25-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed. An unknown age male passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed. An unknown age female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed.
  • A 2012 Hyundai Accent was heading west and was hit in the side-left-rear. The police report did not have details about the male driver.

Police were notified at 2:39 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 753rd injurious crash reported in December 2022, and the 15,518th injurious crash reported in 2022. It was the 129th fatal crash for 2022.
