One person killed near 1605 E 95TH ST in South Deering

A driver was killed after a Monday early morning collision with a fixed object in South Deering on August 28, 2023 at 12:16 AM.

The crash occurred near 1605 E 95TH ST, at a center turn lane. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to a driver's physical condition; and, secondarily, to distraction from outside the vehicle.

A 2019 Volkswagen Jetta was heading north while starting in traffic. The police report described the driver, a 20-year-old man, as going the wrong way. His airbag deployed from the front; he was killed. One other passenger was uninjured.

Police were notified at 12:16 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 1,351st injurious crash reported in August 2023, and the 10,585th injurious crash reported in 2023. It was the 89th fatal crash for 2023.
