A driver was killed; and a passenger and another driver were severely injured after a Wednesday night head on collision in Ashburn on March 29, 2023 at 9:15 PM. 3 other people reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
The crash occurred near 3617 W COLUMBUS AVE, on an undivided road. The posted speed limit was 35 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to traveling the wrong way or on the wrong side; and, secondarily, to reckless, careless, or aggressive driving.
There were four motor vehicles involved in the crash:
- A 2014 Mazda MAZDA6 was heading southwest. The police report described the driver, a 25-year-old man, as going the wrong way. His airbag deployed; he was killed. A 25-year-old male passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed.
- A 2014 Nissan Frontier was heading northeast and was hit in the front. The driver, a 40-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries.
- A 2009 Mazda CX-9 was heading northeast and was hit in the front. The driver, a 38-year-old woman, reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed. A 19-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed.
- A 2023 Hyundai Santa FE was heading southwest and was hit in the front-left-corner. The driver, a 53-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed from the front; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
Police were notified at 9:15 PM. This was the 1,104th injurious crash reported in March 2023, and the 3,262nd injurious crash reported in 2023. It was the 41st fatal crash for 2023.
