One person killed, one person severely injured near 5600 W IRVING PARK RD in Portage Park

A driver was killed and a passenger was severely injured after a Tuesday early morning angle collision in Portage Park on March 26, 2024 at 1:57 AM.

The crash occurred near 5600 W IRVING PARK RD, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was rainy, and the roadway was wet. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to disregarding traffic signals; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2007 Honda was heading west. The police report described the driver, a 19-year-old man, as disregarding traffic controls/signals. He was wearing a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet and he was totally ejected; he was killed.
• A 2013 Volkswagen was heading north and was hit in the side-right. The driver, a 30-year-old man, was uninjured; his airbag deployed from the side. A 21-year-old male passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed from the side. One other passenger was uninjured.

Police were notified at 1:59 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 1,146th injurious crash reported in March 2024, and the 3,526th injurious crash reported in 2024. It was the 21st fatal crash for 2024.
