One person killed, one person severely injured, and one other person injured near 131 W CERMAK RD in Chinatown

A passenger was killed and a driver was severely injured after a Saturday early morning collision with a fixed object in Chinatown on May 12, 2018 at 2:30 AM.

The crash occurred near 131 W CERMAK RD, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to exceeding the posted speed limit; and, secondarily, to driving after drinking (no arrest was made).

A 2005 Jeep Cherokee was heading south while turning left. The police report described the driver, a 23-year-old man, as going too fast for conditions and being under the influence of alcohol. He was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries. A 19-year-old female passenger was killed; her airbag deployed. A 21-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered unspecified injuries; her airbag deployed.

Police were notified at 3:20 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 591st injurious crash reported in May 2018, and the 5,430th injurious crash reported in 2018. It was the 36th fatal crash for 2018.
