Two people killed near 7900 S STONY ISLAND AVE in Avalon Park

A driver and a passenger were killed after a Friday evening sideswipe same direction collision in Avalon Park on May 1, 2020 at 5:30 PM.

The crash occurred near 7900 S STONY ISLAND AVE, at a y-intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dawn, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to vehicle equipment or its condition.

There were three motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 1997 Chevrolet was heading north. The police report described the driver, a 59-year-old man, as disregarding traffic controls/signals. His airbag deployed from the front; he was killed. A 60-year-old female passenger was killed; her airbag deployed from the front. One other passenger was uninjured.
• A 2015 Ford was heading north and was hit in the rear. The driver, a 62-year-old man, was uninjured; his airbag did not deploy. One other passenger was uninjured.
• A 2015 Infiniti was heading north and was hit in the rear. The driver, a 24-year-old man, was uninjured.

Police were notified at 5:30 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 23rd injurious crash reported in May 2020, and the 4,037th injurious crash reported in 2020. It was the 29th fatal crash for 2020.
