One person killed, two people severely injured, and two other people injured near 4928 S CICERO AVE in Garfield Ridge

A passenger was killed; and another passenger and a driver were severely injured after a Wednesday night head on collision in Garfield Ridge on January 20, 2021 at 9:35 PM. 2 other people reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 4928 S CICERO AVE, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to traveling the wrong way or on the wrong side; and, secondarily, to disregarding road markings.

There were four motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2015 Chevrolet Impala was heading north while passing another vehicle. The police report described the driver, a 27-year-old man, as going the wrong way. His airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. A 21-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed. A 19-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed.
• A 2007 Cadillac Escalade was heading south and was hit in the front. The driver, a 51-year-old man, reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed. A 12-year-old female passenger was killed; her airbag deployed.
• A 2011 GMC Yukon was heading south and was hit in the side-right-front. The driver, a 34-year-old woman, was wearing a seat belt; she was uninjured. One other passenger was uninjured.
• A 2013 Toyota RAV4 was heading south and was hit in the front. The driver, a 40-year-old man, was uninjured; his airbag deployed.

Police were notified at 9:35 PM. This was the 648th injurious crash reported in January 2021, and the 648th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 7th fatal crash for 2021.
