One cyclist killed near 2600 N WESTERN AVE in Logan Square
A cyclist was killed after a Wednesday early morning collision in Logan Square on May 26, 2021 at 1:30 AM.
The crash occurred near 2600 N WESTERN AVE, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was rainy, and the roadway was wet but reportedly had a shoulder defect. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to disregarding traffic signals; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
A 2019 Hyundai Sonata was heading south and was hit in the front. The police report described the driver, a 20-year-old woman, as going too fast for conditions. Her airbag did not deploy; she was uninjured. Three other passengers were uninjured.
A 32-year-old man (cyclist) was wearing a helmet. The police report described him as crossing an intersection that had no traffic controls and disregarding traffic controls/signals; he was killed.
Police were notified at 1:33 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 1,218th injurious crash reported in May 2021, and the 5,435th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 40th fatal crash for 2021.
