A passenger was killed after a Friday night head on collision in Englewood on July 23, 2021 at 10:52 PM. 2 other people reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
The crash occurred near 532 W 59TH ST, on a divided road. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (an arrest was made); and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:
- A 1999 Oldsmobile Alero was heading west. The police report described the driver, a 59-year-old man, as going the wrong way and being under the influence of alcohol. His airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
- A 2012 Nissan Altima was heading east and was hit in the front. The driver, an 18-year-old woman, reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed. A 16-year-old male passenger was killed; his airbag deployed. One other passenger was uninjured.
Police were notified at 10:52 PM. This was the 1,224th injurious crash reported in July 2021, and the 8,624th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 71st fatal crash for 2021.
