A driver was killed and two passengers were severely injured after a Friday night sideswipe opposite direction collision in Garfield Park on July 3, 2020 at 9:53 PM.
The crash occurred near 3138 W LAKE ST, on a divided road. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to reckless, careless, or aggressive driving.
There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:
- A 2001 Jeep Cherokee was heading east while avoiding vehicles or objects. The police report described the driver, a 24-year-old man, as going too fast for conditions. He was not wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed from the front; he was killed. A 23-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed from the front. - A 2018 Ford Explorer was heading west and was hit in the front-left-corner. The driver, a 45-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag did not deploy; he was uninjured. One other passenger was uninjured.
Police were notified at 10:17 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 127th injurious crash reported in July 2020, and the 6,449th injurious crash reported in 2020. It was the 54th fatal crash for 2020.
