One person killed, two people severely injured near 200 S LAKE SHORE DR NB in Grant Park

A driver was killed and two passengers were severely injured after a Wednesday early morning rear end collision in Grant Park on June 2, 2021 at 12:25 AM.

The crash occurred near 200 S LAKE SHORE DR NB, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 40 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to reckless, careless, or aggressive driving; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

There were four motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2017 Chrysler 300 was heading north. The police report described the driver, a 31-year-old man, as going too fast for conditions. He was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed; he was killed. An unknown age male passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag did not deploy.
  • A 2005 Toyota 4RUNNER was heading north and was hit in the rear-right-corner. The driver, a 64-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag did not deploy; he was uninjured.
  • A 2013 Nissan Altima was heading south and was hit in the rear-left-corner. The driver, a 26-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag did not deploy; he was uninjured.
  • A 2002 GMC Yukon was heading south and was hit in the front. The driver, a 20-year-old man, was uninjured. A 20-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag did not deploy.

Police were notified at 12:25 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 50th injurious crash reported in June 2021, and the 5,758th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 46th fatal crash for 2021.
