One person killed, one person severely injured near 3500 S LAKE SHORE DR SB in Oakland

A driver was killed and a passenger was severely injured after a Sunday evening collision with a fixed object in Oakland on May 16, 2021 at 7:30 PM.

The crash occurred near 3500 S LAKE SHORE DR SB, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 45 mph. The weather was clear and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash; and, secondarily, to reckless, careless, or aggressive driving.

A 2012 Infiniti was heading south while skidding or losing control. The police report described the driver, a 31-year-old man, as going too fast for conditions. He was not wearing a seat belt, his airbag deployed, and he was totally ejected; he was killed. A 40-year-old male passenger was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries.

Police were notified at 7:31 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 723rd injurious crash reported in May 2021, and the 4,940th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 35th fatal crash for 2021.
