One person killed, and two other people injured near 2901 S LAKE SHORE DR NB in Douglas

A passenger was killed after a Friday morning head on collision in Douglas on October 6, 2023 at 11:48 AM. 2 other people reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 2901 S LAKE SHORE DR NB, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 40 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (an arrest was made); and, secondarily, to traveling the wrong way or on the wrong side.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2018 Honda CR-V was heading south while driving the wrong way. The police report described the driver, a 53-year-old man, as going the wrong way and being under the influence of alcohol. His airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
• A 2022 Tesla Model 3 operated by a rideshare service was heading north and was hit in the front. The driver, a 43-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. A 29-year-old male passenger was not wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed; he was killed.

Police were notified at 11:50 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 306th injurious crash reported in October 2023, and the 12,628th injurious crash reported in 2023. It was the 109th fatal crash for 2023.
