One person killed, two people severely injured, and one other person injured near 5718 N BROADWAY in Edgewater

A passenger was killed; and another passenger and a driver were severely injured after a Thursday night angle collision in Edgewater on July 21, 2022 at 11:48 PM. One other person reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 5718 N BROADWAY, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 35 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to disregarding traffic signals.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2014 Volkswagen Jetta was heading north. The police report described the driver, a 19-year-old man, as disregarding traffic controls/signals. He reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. A 20-year-old male passenger was killed. A 24-year-old male passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries.
  • A 2008 Toyota RAV4 was heading west and was hit in the rear-right-corner. The driver, a 51-year-old man, reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag did not deploy.

There were three other vehicles involved but not being driven:

  • A 2009 Dodge Charger, hit in the front.
  • A 2008 Toyota Prius, hit in the front.
  • A 2003 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, hit in the front.

Police were notified at 11:48 PM. This was the 1,002nd injurious crash reported in July 2022, and the 8,523rd injurious crash reported in 2022. It was the 72nd fatal crash for 2022.
