One person killed, one person severely injured near 5402 S LAKE SHORE DR SB in Hyde Park

A driver was killed and a passenger was severely injured after a Friday evening rear end collision in Hyde Park on August 2, 2019 at 7:25 PM.

The crash occurred near 5402 S LAKE SHORE DR SB, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 45 mph. It was dusk, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2006 Yamaha was heading south. The driver, a 25-year-old man, was wearing a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet and was totally ejected; he was killed. A 21-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries.
  • A 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan was heading south and was hit in the rear-left. The driver, a 71-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag did not deploy; he was uninjured.

Police were notified at 7:30 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 121st injurious crash reported in August 2019, and the 9,313th injurious crash reported in 2019. It was the 56th fatal crash for 2019.
