One person killed, and one other person injured near 1900 N ASHLAND AVE in Bucktown

A driver was killed after a Friday night hit-and-run sideswipe same direction collision in Bucktown on January 20, 2023 at 10:10 PM. One other person reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 1900 N ASHLAND AVE, on an undivided road. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to inadequate driving skill, knowledge, or experience; and, secondarily, to improper overtaking or passing.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2009 BMW was heading north. The police report described the driver, a 26-year-old man, as attempting to pass improperly. His airbag deployed; he was killed. A 26-year-old male passenger reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed.
  • A Toyota Prius was heading north and was hit in the rear-right-corner. The driver, a 24-year-old man, was uninjured; his airbag did not deploy.

Police were notified at 10:16 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 687th injurious crash reported in January 2023, and the 687th injurious crash reported in 2023. It was the 10th fatal crash for 2023.
