One person killed near 6900 S STONY ISLAND AVE in South Shore

A driver was killed after a Wednesday night turning collision in South Shore on July 3, 2019 at 9:53 PM.

The crash occurred near 6900 S STONY ISLAND AVE, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to yield right of way.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2017 Toyota Camry was heading east while turning left. The police report described the driver, a 36-year-old man, as failing to yield. His airbag deployed from the side; he was uninjured.
  • A 2003 Suzuki was heading north. The driver, a 35-year-old man, was wearing a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet and was totally ejected; he was killed.

Police were notified at 9:57 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 172nd injurious crash reported in July 2019, and the 7,800th injurious crash reported in 2019. It was the 47th fatal crash for 2019.
