One person killed, two people severely injured near 4531 W DIVISION ST in Humboldt Park

A passenger was killed; and a driver and another passenger were severely injured after a Thursday night collision with a fixed object in Humboldt Park on May 20, 2021 at 11:40 PM.

The crash occurred near 4531 W DIVISION ST, at a t-intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. It was dark but with streetlights. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash; and, secondarily, to improper lane usage.

A 2013 Hyundai Elantra was heading east. The police report described the driver, a 21-year-old woman, as going too fast for conditions. She was not wearing a seat belt and her airbag deployed from the front; she reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries. A 23-year-old female passenger was not wearing a seat belt and her airbag deployed; she was killed. An 18-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed.

Police were notified at 11:46 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 922nd injurious crash reported in May 2021, and the 5,139th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 36th fatal crash for 2021.
