One person killed, and one other person injured near 9500 S HALSTED ST in Washington Heights

A driver was killed after a Sunday afternoon turning collision in Washington Heights on July 8, 2018 at 3:24 PM. One other person reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 9500 S HALSTED ST, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. The weather was clear and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to improper overtaking or passing.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

  • A 2003 Suzuki was heading south while passing another vehicle. The police report described the driver, a 40-year-old man, as disregarding traffic controls/signals. He was not wearing a helmet and he was totally ejected; he was killed.
  • A 2004 Honda Odyssey was heading north while turning left and was hit in the front-left. The driver, a 28-year-old woman, was wearing a seat belt and her airbag did not deploy; she reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. Four other passengers were uninjured.

Police were notified at 3:34 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 399th injurious crash reported in July 2018, and the 8,341st injurious crash reported in 2018. It was the 50th fatal crash for 2018.
