One pedestrian killed near 7900 S LAFAYETTE AVE in Chatham

A pedestrian was killed after a Thursday evening turning collision in Chatham on January 7, 2021 at 6:44 PM.

The crash occurred near 7900 S LAFAYETTE AVE, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to yield right of way; and, secondarily, to disregarding traffic signals.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2019 Ford Escape was heading southwest while turning left. The police report described the driver, a 32-year-old man, as failing to yield. He was uninjured.
• A 2014 Chevrolet Malibu was heading east while starting in traffic and was hit in the front-left-corner. The police report described the driver, a 32-year-old man, as disregarding traffic controls/signals. He was uninjured.

An unknown age person (pedestrian) was in a crosswalk. The police report described them as crossing with the signal; they were killed.

Police were notified at 6:49 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 227th injurious crash reported in January 2021, and the 227th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 3rd fatal crash for 2021.
