One person killed near 5201 S CICERO AVE in Garfield Ridge

A driver was killed after a Sunday afternoon angle collision in Garfield Ridge on July 19, 2020 at 4:45 PM.

The crash occurred near 5201 S CICERO AVE, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. The weather was clear and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to disregarding traffic signals.

There were eight motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2013 Chevrolet Malibu was heading south. The police report described the driver, a 41-year-old man, as disregarding traffic controls/signals. His airbag deployed; he was uninjured.
• A 1998 Honda Prelude was heading east and was hit in the side-left. The driver, a 77-year-old woman, was wearing a seat belt, her airbag deployed, and was totally ejected; she was killed.
• A 2020 Hyundai Palisade was heading north while slowing or stopping in traffic and was hit in the side-left-rear. The driver, a 43-year-old man, was uninjured.
• A 2017 Chevrolet Express was heading north while slowing or stopping in traffic and was hit in the front-left-corner. The driver, a 57-year-old man, was uninjured.
• A 2006 Chevrolet Trail Blazer was heading north while slowing or stopping in traffic and was hit in the rear-left-corner. The driver, a 49-year-old woman, was uninjured.
• A 1997 Buick Lesabre was heading north while slowing or stopping in traffic and was hit in the side-left. The driver, a 51-year-old man, was uninjured.
• A 2017 Nissan Altima was heading north while slowing or stopping in traffic and was hit in the front. The police report did not have details about the 37-year-old female driver.
• A 2015 NEW Flyer operated by the CTA was heading north while slowing or stopping in traffic and was hit in the side-left. The driver, a 33-year-old woman, was uninjured.

Police were notified at 4:45 PM. This was the 943rd injurious crash reported in July 2020, and the 7,265th injurious crash reported in 2020. It was the 66th fatal crash for 2020.
