One person killed near 959 W GRAND AVE in West Town
A driver was killed after a Friday night turning collision in West Town on May 14, 2021 at 9:02 PM.
The crash occurred near 959 W GRAND AVE, on an undivided road. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to yield right of way; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:
- A 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee was heading west while turning left. The police report described the driver, a 38-year-old man, as failing to yield and being under the influence of alcohol and drugs. His airbag did not deploy; he was uninjured. One other passenger was uninjured.
- A 2007 Suzuki Motorcycle was heading east and was hit in the front. The driver, a 32-year-old man, was wearing a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet and was totally ejected; he was killed.
Police were notified at 9:03 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 647th injurious crash reported in May 2021, and the 4,864th injurious crash reported in 2021. It was the 33rd fatal crash for 2021.
