One person killed, and two other people injured near 2634 E 126TH ST in Hegewisch

A passenger was killed after a Friday night turning collision in Hegewisch on May 24, 2019 at 11:17 PM. 2 other people reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 2634 E 126TH ST, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to disregarding traffic signals; and, secondarily, to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2013 Chevrolet Malibu was heading southeast while turning left. The police report described the driver, an 18-year-old man, as failing to yield. He was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed from the front; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
• A 1994 Toyota Tercel was heading north. The driver, a 64-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed from the front; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. A 60-year-old female passenger was wearing a seat belt and her airbag deployed from the front; she was killed.

Police were notified at 11:23 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 1,131st injurious crash reported in May 2019, and the 5,740th injurious crash reported in 2019. It was the 36th fatal crash for 2019.
