Two people killed, one person severely injured, and one other person injured near 5202 W ROOSEVELT RD in Austin

Two passengers were killed and another passenger was severely injured after a Wednesday evening hit-and-run turning collision in Austin on December 2, 2020 at 8:05 PM. One other person reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 5202 W ROOSEVELT RD, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash; and, secondarily, to distraction from outside the vehicle.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2015 KIA Optima was heading west. The police report described the driver, a 25-year-old man, as disregarding traffic controls/signals. His airbag deployed; he reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries. A 21-year-old female passenger was killed; her airbag deployed. A 23-year-old male passenger was killed; his airbag deployed. A 25-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed.
• A vehicle of unknown make was heading south while turning right and was hit in the front-left-corner. The police report did not have details about the driver.

Police were notified at 8:10 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 59th injurious crash reported in December 2020, and the 13,218th injurious crash reported in 2020. It was the 123rd fatal crash for 2020.
