One person killed, one person severely injured near 2200 E 95TH ST in South Deering

A driver was killed and a passenger was severely injured after a Sunday early morning turning collision in South Deering on May 5, 2024 at 1:10 AM.

The crash occurred near 2200 E 95TH ST, at a four-way intersection. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to improper overtaking or passing.

There were two motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2002 Lexus IS was heading east while passing another vehicle. The police report described the driver, a 19-year-old man, as attempting to pass improperly. His airbag deployed; he was killed. A 17-year-old male passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; his airbag deployed.
• A 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee was heading east while turning left and was hit in the front-left-corner. The driver, a 23-year-old woman, was uninjured; her airbag deployed. Two other passengers were uninjured.

Police were notified at 1:15 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 258th injurious crash reported in May 2024, and the 5,477th injurious crash reported in 2024. It was the 30th fatal crash for 2024.
