One person killed, one person severely injured near 8828 S STONY ISLAND AVE in Calumet Heights

A passenger was killed and another passenger was severely injured after a Sunday morning collision with a parked motor vehicle in Calumet Heights on May 22, 2022 at 5:05 AM.

The crash occurred near 8828 S STONY ISLAND AVE, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. It was dark but with streetlights, the weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (an arrest was made).

A 2017 GMC Terrain was heading south. The driver, a 36-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed; he was uninjured. A 33-year-old female passenger was killed; her airbag deployed. A 25-year-old female passenger reportedly suffered incapacitating injuries; her airbag deployed.

There was one other vehicle involved but not being driven: A 2020 Great Dane, hit in the rear-left-corner.

Police were notified at 5:06 AM and made a report on scene. This was the 1,051st injurious crash reported in May 2022, and the 5,517th injurious crash reported in 2022. It was the 49th fatal crash for 2022.
