One person killed, and one other person injured near 2401 E 130TH ST in Hegewisch

A driver was killed after a Thursday afternoon rear end collision in Hegewisch on April 4, 2024 at 2:45 PM. One other person reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred near 2401 E 130TH ST, on a road divided by a median barrier. The posted speed limit was 30 mph. There was a traffic light. The weather was clear and the roadway was wet. The police report attributed the cause of the crash to a driver's physical condition.

There were four motor vehicles involved in the crash:

• A 2011 Nissan Versa was heading east. The police report described the driver, an unknown age female, as failing to yield and being ill or having fainted. She was wearing a seat belt and her airbag deployed from the front; she was killed.
• A 2012 Hyundai Genesis was heading east while slowing or stopping in traffic and was hit in the rear. The driver, a 60-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed from the front; he was uninjured. An 81-year-old female passenger was wearing a seat belt and her airbag deployed from the front; she reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
• A 2001 Chevrolet S10 was heading east while slowing or stopping in traffic and was hit in the rear. The driver, a 47-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed from the front; he was uninjured. One other passenger was uninjured.
• A 2016 Chevrolet Malibu was heading east and was hit in the rear. The driver, a 68-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt; he was uninjured.

Police were notified at 3:45 PM and made a report on scene. This was the 180th injurious crash reported in April 2024, and the 3,938th injurious crash reported in 2024. It was the 25th fatal crash for 2024.
